Veneer (Wear Layer for Hardwood)
The top layer of finished hardwood on an engineered plank. Thickness in mm determines refinish potential.
On engineered hardwood, veneer is the top layer of real finished wood — typically 0.6mm to 6mm thick. Thicker veneer means more sand-and-refinish cycles over the floor's life and a more authentic feel underfoot.
Rule of thumb: 1mm of veneer ≈ 1 sand-and-refinish cycle. A 4mm veneer engineered floor can typically be refinished 3-4 times. A 1mm veneer is a one-and-done install.
Always disclose veneer thickness on the customer-facing estimate. It's the most material spec for engineered hardwood pricing differences and the most common surprise on warranty claims.
