Use this calculator to ballpark a flooring project's total cost. Enter the room's square footage, the per-square-foot material cost, the per-square-foot labor rate, your waste factor, and an optional tax rate. We do the math for you so you can give the customer a real number on the first call.
How to use it
- Measure the area. Multiply length × width for each room. Add the totals to get the project's total square footage.
- Pick a per-sqft material price. Use the published price of the SKU you're installing — LVP usually $1.50-$5/sqft, engineered hardwood $4-$10, porcelain tile $3-$8.
- Set a per-sqft labor rate. Industry rates run $1.50-$4/sqft for LVP, $3-$6/sqft for hardwood install, $4-$8/sqft for tile. Adjust for demo, leveling, and stairs.
- Add a waste factor. 10% waste is standard for square rooms. Bump to 15% for diagonal patterns and 20% for herringbone or complex layouts.
- Read the total. We add material + labor, apply the waste factor to material only, then add tax. The result is your all-in project price.
FAQ
How much does flooring installation cost per square foot?+
Total installed cost (material + labor) typically runs $5-$8/sqft for LVP, $8-$15/sqft for engineered hardwood, $7-$15/sqft for porcelain tile, and $10-$20/sqft for solid hardwood. Demo, leveling, and underlayment add $1-$3/sqft on top.
What waste factor should I use?+
10% for straight-lay rectangular rooms is the industry default. Diagonal layouts go to 15%. Herringbone, chevron, and other complex patterns need 18-20%. Tile follows the same rule of thumb.
Should I include tax in my customer estimate?+
Yes — most flooring jurisdictions tax materials and sometimes labor. Confirm your state and local rules with your accountant. This calculator includes an optional tax field so you can show the all-in number on the customer-facing PDF.
Does this calculator save my data?+
