Flooring Waste Calculator
Stop ordering one box too few — or three too many.
This is the long-form waste calculator: sqft, layout pattern, plus a 'cut-heavy' modifier for rooms full of cabinets, islands, transitions, and angled walls. Output is the recommended waste percentage and the total square footage to order, ready to drop on a purchase order.
How to use it
- Enter installable sqft. From your room or our square footage calculator.
- Pick a layout. Straight-lay, diagonal, herringbone, chevron, or random.
- Add a cut-heavy modifier. Toggle on for kitchens with islands, bathrooms, or stair landings — adds 3–5%.
- Read order qty. Recommended waste % × installable sqft = sqft to order.
FAQ
How is this different from your Waste Factor Calculator?+
The waste factor calculator covers the basics in 3 inputs. This long-form version lets you tune for cut-heavy rooms, transitions, and odd geometries — situations where a flat 10% would leave you short.
What waste % do diagonal patterns need?+
Plan for 15% as a floor and 18% if the room is small or full of cuts. The cutoffs from 45° plank ends aren't recoverable.
Why does cut-heavy add so much?+
Every cabinet kickplate, island corner, and pipe penetration is a cut. Most cuts produce a sliver that can't be reused, so the waste compounds quickly past ~6 cuts per 100 sqft.
