Waste Factor Calculator
Order the right amount of LVP, hardwood, or tile — every time.
Underordering means a frantic Saturday call to the supplier. Overordering means dead inventory in the warehouse. This calculator gives you the right waste factor for the layout pattern you're installing, then tells you exactly how many square feet to order.
How to use it
- Enter installable sqft. Type the room's measured square footage (or use our square footage calculator).
- Pick the layout pattern. Straight lay (10%), diagonal (15%), herringbone or chevron (20%).
- Adjust for cuts. Add 2-5% if the room has a lot of cabinets, islands, or angled walls.
- Read the order quantity. We multiply installable sqft by (1 + waste factor) to give you the order amount.
FAQ
Why is herringbone waste so high?+
Herringbone and chevron patterns require cutting plank ends at 45° angles, which produces more cutoff than straight-lay. The 20% waste factor accounts for unusable triangular offcuts.
Can I use less than 10% waste?+
On very simple square rooms with full-plank widths, some experienced installers run 7-8%. We don't recommend it — the cost of a half-day to drive back to the supplier outweighs the cost of a few extra boxes.
Does waste factor apply to tile too?+
Yes. The same percentages apply: 10% straight set, 15% diagonal, 20% complex patterns like herringbone or pinwheel.
